Hi, I'm Zara. I've been belly dancing for
some years now. I was initially mentored by the inspirational
dancer/teacher Terri Hardy and went on to attend workshops/courses
run by famous dancers including Lubna Emam, Yasmina of Cairo and Shafeek
Ibrahim.
Being half Egyptian I
was surrounded by the music of Egypt and that was what first attracted
my interest in the dance. After my first dance class I never tuned
back. Belly dance is my passion!
In the past I've
danced at some very different places including The British Museum and
Hylands Park Chelmsford - where the V Festival is held. I've danced at
events such as Cafe Ruby and various dance festivals.
I have had the honour of working with the renowned tabla player and
musician Tim Garside and, as one of the Serafina dancers, with other
fantastic musicians such as Guy Shalom and the beautiful accordion
player, El Gamal. I also had the chance to share my love of belly dance
with the whole of London in an interview I did on BBC London Radio (7th
September 2008). In the past I've danced in groups such as the Serafina
dancers and my own group, The Stars Of The Sahara. I also enjoyed being
president of Oxford Middle Eastern Dance Society for a term. Whilst at
Oxford I danced at Tarboush and Bar Meze restaurants.
Now, I am living
in north east London.
I danced regularly,
for 2+ years, at
Cypriana Restaurant, Leyton but now, as a member of
El-Layali Orientale - The Middle Eastern Music & Dance Company,
you can mostly find me dancing at their
events.
