Refreshing Lemonade:

Egyptian lemons are very small - unlike the lemons which are readily available here -  but very, very juicy.  Lemonade, made at home in Egypt, is just the best drink ever!! So refreshing!!  It really is worth the trouble to try making this if you have never had home made lemonade before.

To get a more authentic taste I mix lemons and limes.  You may need to adjust the amount of sugar to your own taste and according to how much juice you get.

5  lemons

1  lime

6 glasses of water

½ glass of sugar

1)      Squeeze the juice from the lemons and the lime

2)      Mix in a large jug with the water

3)      Add the sugar and stir ‘till dissolved

4)      Chill in the fridge

5)      Stir, pour into glasses and serve

Auntie's Strawberry Crush

In Egypt you can buy wonderful fresh fruit juices on almost every street.  The juice bars sell “asub” squeezed sugar cane and other freshly squeezed juices which are in season – orange, mango and carrot being the most usual.

Here is something a bit different which one of my aunts always has (when strawberries are in season) in her fridge ready for visiting grandchildren, nieces, nephews, sons, daughters (most importantly me!) etc.   It is delicious….

1)      Chop the strawberries into small pieces

2)      Fill a tumbler about ⅓ full with chopped strawberries

3)      Sprinkle 1 - 2 teaspoons of sugar over the strawberries

4)      Just about cover the strawberries with water

5)      Stir vigorously with a fork to break up the strawberries

6)      Top up with water

7)      Stir gently

8)      Cover and refrigerate

1)  Serve in the tumbler with a spoon

2)  Stir, drink and enjoy the strawberries

Truly Yummy!!!

Alternative:  Use juicy pomegranate seeds!
